Special Olympics Washington has a wide range of volunteer opportunities from driving athletes to events and helping manage information booths to coaching and partnering with Special Olympics Athletes in our Unified Sports programs.

Volunteer Opportunities and Registration

Thousands of dedicated volunteers are needed to support the competition venues and activities that comprise Summer Games.  In addition to Games Weekend, there are also volunteer opportunities in the days leading up to Opening Ceremonies.  Volunteers play a vital role in all facets of the Games and we couldn’t do it without you!  Thank you in advance for your support of our athletes and Special Olympics Washington!

Labor Force Volunteers

URGENT NEED!  Strong, dedicated volunteers are needed to provide physical support (manual labor) in the set-up and tear-down of the various venues.  Primary task is the placement, set-up and tear-down of the numerous large awnings and tents.  Other tasks include placement, set-up and tear-down of stanchions and flagging, tables and chairs, small bleachers and other duties as assigned. 

DATES: Tuesday, May 31 - Monday, June 6
TIMES:  8:30am – 4:30pm, lunch provided
NOTE: Due to liability, must be at least 18 years old

SPECIAL NOTE:  It is preferred, but not required, that you commit to volunteer for the Tuesday-Friday shifts (4 days) to reduce the need to repeat instructions.  Single day volunteers are also in urgent need and are encouraged to register.

Competition Venue Volunteers

Approximately 2500 athletes from across the state of Washington will compete in five sporting events at Summer Games.  Volunteers are needed at the Aquatics, Athletics (track & field), Cycling, Soccer and Power Lifting venues to assist with the competition.  Knowledge or experience in the specific sport is not required but volunteers with experience may be placed in select assignments as needed.

Olympic Town / Activities Volunteers

While at Summer Games, athletes, coaches, chaperones and family members participate in non-athletic activities and volunteers are needed in these areas as well.  Olympic Town is a designated area at select venues where participants can go in between competition events to relax, take a break and have fun!  Stations include arts and crafts, bowling, bean bag toss and karaoke, just to name a few.  Other Activities include the Victory Dance, Victory Happening, and Family BBQ.

Medical / First Aid Volunteers (licensed)

Licensed medical professionals are needed to volunteer to provide first aid and medical assistance to Summer Games participants as needed.  Professionals include physicians (DR), registered nurses (RN), licensed practical nurses (LPN), physician assistants (PA), paramedics, and emergency medical technicians (EMT).  Valid licensure/certification and a current WSP background check is required (valid for 3 years).

Wellness / Healthy Athlete Volunteers

Both licensed and non-licensed volunteers are needed.  Licensed medical professions in specific specialties (dentistry, podiatry, audiology, optometry and sports medicine/physical therapy) are needed to volunteer to provide preventative medical services to athletes.  Special Olympics is the largest medical provider for persons with intellectual disabilities and professionals are needed to provide these services in the Healthy Athlete venues.  Non-licensed volunteers are also needed to support these professionals by assisting with registration, escorts, shoe procurement, etc.

Athlete & Family Lounges and Sports Information Volunteers

Volunteers are needed at all of the competition venues to host the Athlete & Family Lounges.  These areas are “quiet zones” where athletes and family members can take a break, complete a survey regarding their Special Olympics experience, and learn about resources other ways to get involved in their communities.  Further details and instructions will be provided prior to Summer Games.

The Sports Information Desk varies by competition venue but may include a location for team check-in, Summer Games information, and competition results.  Further details and instructions would be provided prior to Summer Games.

Young Athletes Exhibition Volunteers

Young Athletes is an inclusive sport and play program for children ages 2 to 7 with and without intellectual disabilities. It is focused on early introduction for young children to sports and the world of Special Olympics. Volunteers are needed to facilitate the various Young Athletes exhibitions held during Summer Games on Saturday, June 4th.  Further details and instructions will be provided prior to Summer Games.

Games Management Team (GMT) Volunteers

Are you looking to become more involved with Special Olympics Washington, specifically Summer Games?  We are looking for a handful of volunteers that would like to help in the planning and execution of three dynamic programs new to Special Olympics Washington.  These programs include Family Support, Young Athletes, and Athlete Leadership Programs.  Volunteers would work directly with Special Olympics Washington staff members as well as other Summer Games GMT members.

Tech / Results Volunteers

This volunteer role is for those that are tech savvy and can help troubleshoot with SOWA staff as needed.  These volunteers would assist SOWA staff and competition venue managers to input results into the Games Management Software program and post for athletes, teams and family members to see.  Additional details and instructions to be given both in advance of Summer Games and at the competition venues.

Fans in the Stands

This volunteer role is a great opportunity for individuals or groups that might not be able to commit to a full volunteer shift or may not meet the age requirement (minimum age is 11).  Volunteers support the athletes by watching from the stands, cheering on the athletes, waving pom-poms, displaying signs, and other encouraging methods.  Fans in the Stands can be found at Opening Ceremonies (Friday, June 3/JBLM), Aquatics (Saturday, June 4/Federal Way) and Soccer (Saturday/Sunday, June 4 & 5/JBLM).

Misc. Licensed Volunteers (pre-assigned role/venue)

These volunteers include licensed individuals or groups who have already been recruited, know their assignment but need to register per SOWA requirements, base access, and/or volunteer t-shirt sizing.  As an example, these individuals may include, cosmetologists, amateur radio operators and massage therapists.  If you don’t see your group/category as an option in the registration form’s drop down menu, please email Susan at volunteer@sowa.org.
